Semester 2. Week 2. Further Group Work; Flow Diagram and Feedback.

unnamed

After Further discussion within the group it was unanimously agreed that the ‘recycling’ theme should be scrapped to focus on the ‘monument shaped flags’ idea from earlier discussion. This was decided as it links more to the Storytelling factor of the project which this would require individuals to write their own or family/friends stories linked to migration or heritage (Linking to prominent demographics within London).

The ‘digital marketing’ that this idea will utilise is the use of a certain number of retweets of shorts stories (Paragraphs) under the hashtag ‘What’s Your Story’ or ‘London Is Open’. Selected tweets/stories from viral campaign will be shown on the back panel liking to the image presentation of the front panel. Story/Tweet changes every 30 minutes or Hour while still linking to what was presented in the front panel (Five/Six stories on a loop in static animation for Back Panel?).

Semester 2. Week 1. Group Mind map and three proposed ideas. Part 2.

unnamed

The Group I’m in are comprised of Fabiano, Tara and Andrew. Image above showcase mind map produced during Week 1 with Tara and Fabiano.

Three Ideas presentation to group for Week 2 presented below;

Three possible ideas for ‘London is Open’ campaign and one idea expanded on how the Data Driven Digital Marketing will affect it (Audience interaction with billboard and results billboard will produce as a consequence of said interaction);

  1. Try to create the hastag #hatch, a baby chick would appear from an egg after a certain number of tweets/retweets with the main hashtag trending the London is Open Twitter account. Meaning refers to London is open for new beginnings and welcomes the unexpected.

  1. Expansion on brief outline of Idea 4 from previous group discussion with new elements provided by myself; after a number of people hashtag a love heart symbol the heart made up of a collage of multinational flags will burst (fireworks) with the slogan ‘Love is London, #London is Open’ appearing for brief period of time before turning back to the heart again.

  1. The hashtag #bekind or #support can be become viral by having people take photos of themselves committing kindness to another human being. After a certain number of tweets/retweet and photos, the two hands shaking each other/two people hugging/flower (Black outlines, simplified, style of maker pen?) with the slogan #London is Open below, the image (hand Shaking etc.) will fill with a collage of all the photos that went viral on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram with the word ‘Always’ appearing below the #London is Open slogan for a period of time before disappearing. Each billboard can have a different array of collaged images. This connects to warm sentiment of the London is Open campaign in regards to showing compassion to one’s fellow man; this would also help to spread kindness, maturity and respect between the various individuals within London.

The Idea I feel would be the most affective in showcasing what the campaign ‘#London is Open’ is all about is the third idea involving the photo collages and hashtag #support. This would not only bring out the best in people during this troubled political climate but also provide a lovely piece on the billboards down oxford street showcasing the preferred universal quality of providing support, kindness and respect to whoever needs it’s. This will also instill more maturity and provide purpose to people’s lives, both young and old, which is sadly all too common for people to not have a positive purpose or goal in life.

The three links above showcase the music considered for the final 40/50 seconds of the film. I ultimately chosen the ‘Go Home Your Drunk’ suite as it wasn’t too comical like the other two music variants Initially Considered and fitted the theme of stereotypes being broken in regards to the drug culture and the apparent dominant buyers being young adults.

Demographics ‘Video Project’. Week 12 Action Plan. Week 11. Part 7.

Week 12 Action Plan for Editing Film. Look at Screenshots on Premiere Programmes (Exercises) File on Hard drive to refresh on tools within programme.

Include Narration from Introduction/Conclusion Script into film if there’s time.

When moving film/sound clips make sure they don’t overlap whether they’re on the same layer or the layer above or below for if this is the case the clip covered will be deleted.

ALWAYS SAVE PROGRAMME WHEN CHANGE IS APPLIED TO EDITED FILM (SAVES LOSING DATA).

No Music will be applied. Narration and background noise from shoot I done with Vita will be utilised, no need to give video too much emotion over the subject being comprised of facts and answers rather than a narrative a beginning, middle and end. Interview footage will also be not tweaked at the time of writing this due to reasons stated earlier in this paragraph.

Attempt to put all edited clips from Interview/Grafton Footage on one layer to save confusion?

Basic Structure of Film;

  • Introduction. ARU logo over beginning footage. Include It is often considered Young Adults dominate the ‘Modern’ Drug Culture. An interview within this short film tackles the subject with recent statistics and data. This Interview was carried out and Presented on Wednesday 6th December 2018 by Tasarla Chester; The answers provided by the general public are as follows; if recordings are salvageable or if I have time.

    • Intro (Tasarla introducing herself)
    • Compilation of Question 1 and Answers from the Individuals Interviewed.
  • Slow Motion (50%) with footage running backwards with Answers given for Question 1 Consist of 80% to 90% overall written over footage in text (Add narration of Text read out if possible?).

  • Compilation of Question 2 and Answers from Individual interviewed

    •
  • Slow Motion (50%) with footage running backwards with The Main Drugs listed for Question 2 mostly comprise of Weed, Ecstasy and Cocaine. written over footage in text (Add narration of Text read out if possible?).

  • Compilation of Question 3 and Answers from Individual interviewed
  • Slow Motion (50%) with footage running backwards with Question 3’s answers consist of £100 for Cocaine, £40 for Ketamine and £10 for Mandy Pill. written over footage in text (Add narration of Text read out if possible?).

  • Final Conclusion written out in text over Edited Footage I shot with Vita (Reversed of 50% Speed?) before fading out with ARU logo appearing again with Roman Numerals below it indicating year it was made (Found at end credits of BBC/ITV shows etc.)? Scripts being These Results confirming the Public Bias and Myth surrounding the average student’s intake of recreational drugs. (Add narration of Text read out if possible?).

Demographics ‘Video Project’. Notes and Images (ARU Logo) used for Video. Week 11. Part 6

The two images below showcase the ‘Questions’ Tasarla has given out during her interview. Questions were broken down to three (Introduction/Conclusion Script) with Question 3 in Video taking answers from Question 5 rather than the original question 3 due it not proving enough answers to provide a solid stat.

The next Two images showcase the image used for edited video and other logo that was considered but ultimately not included in final product (ARU Logo). The logo I chosen felt more universal and to the point as well as linking to the BBC watermark that is often presented at the beginning of their respective programmes (i.e. Louis Theorux); linking to the documentary influence and mimicry that is present in edited film.

Demographics ‘Video Project’. ‘Demographics Research (500 word)’/ Notes/ Script (Own narration) for own Edited Version of Five Minute Video. Week 11. Part 5.

Demographics Research (500 Words)

The First set of Statistics and Data I uncovered for the Demographics research focused upon the total number of people within the UK;

Number of people aged 18 and above in the UK is approximately 66, 725, 921 million (Urban Population- 81.6%) at the time of writing this down in late 2018 (Thursday 22nd November).

Worldometers, 2018. United Kingdom Population (1950-2018). [online] Available at: <http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/uk-population/> [Accessed 6 December 2018].

The thoughts I had while overlooking these particular statistics consist of what was mostly the shock of how the population within the United Kingdom has increased within the last few years at the time of writing this sentence in 2018 with other statistics and data confirming the increase in the ageing population; providing interesting insight to an otherwise controversial topic both economic and political in regards to how the question of looking after said aging population will cared for in the present and inevitable future.

The Second Array of Statistics/Data I researched was for the initial idea I conceived for the group project (which was not chosen by group) focuses upon the number of people ‘Aged 16 and Over’ who are unemployed within the UK;

Total number of people below and over the ‘aged 16 and above’ are 1,381 (4.1%) Unemployment out of the 32,409 (61.0%) people who are in Employment during Jul-Sep 2018. (Data Publication 13th November 2018).

Office for National Statistics, 2018. AO2 SA: Employment, unemployment and economic inactivity for people aged 16 and over and aged from 16 to 64 (seasonally adjusted). [online] Available at: <https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/employmentandemployeetypes/datasets/employmentunemploymentandeconomicinactivityforpeopleaged16andoverandagedfrom16to64seasonallyadjusteda02sa> [Accessed 6 December 2018].

The conclusions I came while overlooking the statistics chosen consist of how intriguing the results are in relation to how many people are in employment as well as unemployed which provided an interesting balance to a topic that isn’t overly positive. Despite the gradual increase in Employment there is also an increase in Unemployment, confirming the bittersweet rules of the current economic situation from mid- 2017 to mid-2018. The rate of unemployment ‘unemployment rate’ decreased by from 4.8% (Aug-Oct 2016) to 4.1% (Aug-Oct 2018).

The Third Array of Statistics/Data I uncovered while searching up Demographics is the further details of unemployment and the various reasons that can lead an individual down this path;

Dataset: A02 SA: Employment, unemployment and economic inactivity for people aged 16 and over and aged from 16 to 64 (seasonally adjusted)

Unemployed 20.4%, Retired 16.8%, Sick or Disabled 7.7%, Looking After Family 15.7%, Student 12.6 %, Other Inactive 7.3% (All make up 100% in England, updated 13 November 2018).

Office for National Statistics, 2014. Reasons given by people living in workless households for not working by region. [online] Available at: <https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peoplenotinwork/unemployment/datasets/reasonsgivenbypeoplelivinginworklesshouseholdsfornotworkingbyregion> [Accessed 6 December 2018].

The Conclusions and Answers provided by the sites statistics/data above proved, in my opinion, to show a more rounded and human perspective upon the complex reasoning behind unemployment as well as other factors that can lead to not being employed. The data in regards to the Students being 12.6%, higher than the Sick or Disabled, proved to be also intriguing when it’s considered the most dominant group within the ‘Unemployed’ Line-up. The increased economic inactivity of the Sick and Disabled only demonstrate the poor treatment the British Economy/Government provides for these groups of people in large numbers.

The Fourth Array of Data/Statistics showcases the studies related to the misuse of recreational drugs by data collected by the Hospital Admissions within England as taken from the Main ‘NHS’ Website;

Deaths related to drug misuse (England and Wales)

  • In 2016 there were 2,593 registered deaths in England and Wales related to drug misuse. This is an increase of 5 per cent on 2015 and 58 per cent higher than 2006
  • Deaths related to drug misuse are at their highest level since comparable records began in 1993

Drug use among children (England)

  • In 2016, 24 per cent of pupils reported they had ever taken drugs. This compares to 15 per cent in 2014.
  • The likelihood of having ever taken drugs increased with age, from 11 per cent of 11 year olds to 37 per cent of 15 year olds.

NHS Digital, 2018. Statistics on Drug Misuse: England, 2018 [PAS]. [online] Available at: <https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/statistics-on-drug-misuse/2018> [Accessed 6 December 2018].

NHS, 2018. Statistics on drugs misuse. [pdf] NHS Digital. Available at:<file:///C:/Users/Student/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/IE/ODJ2WYCW/drug-misu-eng-2018-rep.pdf> [Accessed 6 December 2018].

The gut reactions that I had which can be related to both the shared statistics that can be seen above mostly consist, like the demographic increase within the UK, of shock at the increased percentage of the nation misusing illicit drugs over the last few years as well as the main group who abuse said drugs being predominantly Male’s within their early 20’s to late 40’s. The statistics unveiled around Children taking drugs was also initially surprising to me considering the lowest age is estimated to being 11 years, which I thought the lowest would only be 13-15 years old before reading statistics/data. The conclusion I came to is despite the slight increase in both children and deaths it is however as stated in the statistics above only represent a small proportion of the population with said data being often exploited for hyperbolic journalism.

Introduction (Beginning of Video?)

It is often considered Young Adults dominate the ‘Modern’ Drug Culture.

An interview within this short film tackles the subject with recent statistics and data.

Conclusion (Script for Recording with my own Vocals);

This Interview was carried out and Presented on Wednesday 6th December 2018 by Tasarla Chester;

The answers provided by the general public are as follows;

Answers given for Question 1 Consist of 80% to 90% overall

The Main Drugs listed for Question 2 mostly comprise of Weed, Ecstasy and Cocaine.

Question 3’s answers consist of £100 for Cocaine, £40 for Ketamine and £10 for Mandy Pill.

These Results confirming the Public Bias and Myth surrounding the average student’s intake of recreational drugs.

Notes taken when looking over Tasarla’s Interview (Break Down Information and average statistics between individuals that were interviewed. Contributed to Script above).  Only expanded upon questions that had the most answers or were answered during the interview as can be seen in the script breaking down the information gathered earlier in this blog;

Demographics ‘Video Project’. Group Project. Week 10 (Part 3). Notes taken in Class and Activities recorded/planned out.

The group I’m in is comprised of myself, Tasarla Chester, Kurtis Bevan and Vita Polkolva with the idea from Tasarla’s idea of Drug Culture and stigma/stereotype often associated to students knowing ins and out of drug culture.

Tasarlas (Drug Culture) “Chosen Idea for Further Development”;

The group felt overall that Tasarla’s idea of question the stereotype of the youth being embroiled into the world of Drug Culture ticked off the boxes for fitting the theme of demographics, practicality of producing the film from the template she addressed. The subject was more approachable in regards to research for statistics as well as performing the interviews to the general public with added questionnaires given to students within the university itself.

Vita (Stereotype and Product. Two Separate Ideas);

Although her idea links to demographics project and the idea is possible to create in real time with appropriate materials, both the proposal was too broad on the subject matter which was not made clear thought during the presentation she gave to group at the time of writing this down. Improvements for her proposed ideas as they were both similar in their faults is to have a clear subject to convey which only touched upon briefly.

My Idea (Homeless);

The idea I proposed was similar in vein to what ‘Tasarla’ put forward in her idea presentation only with the Homeless being the main subjects in question who relate to the question of Demographics.

Although my idea links to Project thematically as well as some areas being easy to mimic for final video (Presenter talking to camera being one) the only factor that stopped this from being considered for the final video produced by the group is the subject of the ‘Homeless’ themselves which would prove too difficult and most likely problematic to actually interview the homeless, the lack of searchable statistics and the way the video is structured containing too many elements that would require more than three weeks to complete.

‘Group Member Roles’ sheet given out can be seen below addressing the questions brought up in said sheet in regards to the five minute video the group will produce (Video Project Pre-Production Planning);

unnamed.jpg

Statistics Research I produced;

Around 1 in 25 (4.0%) adults aged 16 to 59 had taken a drug in the last month, while around 1 in 11 (9.0%) young adults aged 16 to 24 had done so. Neither proportion has changed statistically significantly compared with the 2015/16 survey. Both are statistically significantly lower compared with a decade ago, where 6.0 per cent of 16 to 59 year olds reported taking a drug in the last month and 14.3 per cent of 16 to 24 year olds had done so.

Work Plan for Each Member of Group;

  • I and Vita were tasked to film footage of the university outside and the general public walking to fill out the introduction and possible outro for the five minute film.
  • Tasarla focused upon the Statistics research as well as perform the Interview the day myself and Vita shot said footage for beginning of video but in the night time in the city centre of Cambridge.
  • I’ll be the planned primary editor when Week 11 comes around to edit the footage that shot over the last two weeks. Kurtis, Tasarla and Vita will overlook and most likely edited and dictate decisions on final version of video (These shared roles are addressed in the ‘Video Project Pre-Production Planning’ Sheet given out in Week 10 that recorded in this blog).
  • All the group members agreed upon the questions that will be asked for the interviews that Tasarla will capture on Film as well as the questionnaire that is planned to be given out during Week 11. Vita will work up a selection of possible Typography for the video during Week 11 with group deciding on which font would be suitable for the video itself.
