Creative Digital Media, Week 5 ‘Emerging Technologies Notes and ’Presentation Task (Augmented Reality)’

Notes taken during talk;

Emerging Tech= AI, Virtual Reality (VR), 3D Printing.

  • Affective Computing Computing= Development of systems that can recognise, interpret, process and simulate human affects.
  • Sentiment Analysis/ Affective Computing can be used for text as well as facial expression (Detect positives, negatives, happy, sad etc).
  • Virtual Reality Headsets been about since the 1960’s. Used to watch films, play games and training for firefighters etc.
  • Augmented Reality; Similar to VR but instead of being in a completely virtual world, aspects that are from digital realm overlaid over the real world (Sat Nav-esque; digital path leading to chosen path). Can be used to visualize architecture plans to demonstrate what architecture will be like in unfinished section of building (3D Holograms).

3D Printing;

  • Device prints out physical objects. Builds up object in layers. 12 hours to print object in plastic, glass or ceramic (Later two being most expensive). Can’t print objects with moving parts, objects like vases are what the printer is capable to print at the time of writing. 3D Rendering Programme used to provide basis on computer for printer. Used to provide prototypes for products before making final outcome.
  • Blockchain/Cryptocurrencies (Formed in 1991);
  • Bitcoin, Ripple, Ethereum. It’s a list of transactions, everyone keeps a list and every time a new transaction occurs everyone updates the lists. Can be made anonymous with trading currencies (Leads to problems such as money laundering).
  • Blockchain is open to anybody. Date; Receiver, Hash; Fingerprint (Used to detect changes in block) if Hash is changed it won’t be the same block. All blocks after tweaked block will not be the same/valid. Used to collect Taxes. More Distributist and Secure than most storage systems.
  • Proof of Work; Security.

Peer to Peer group communication used to detect block that has been tampered with, new blocks only accepted if all members accept the contents of said block.

Presentation Task (Three Minute Slideshow Research);

The technology that will be presented in the slideshow is the developments and uses of the Augmented Reality. Group Members include Tara and Vita. The work below showcases what I uncovered for the second of three sections of the slideshow focusing upon theories and predictions for the usage of Augmented Reality.

Augmented Reality is development from the virtual reality technology involving the process of superimposing  a computer generated image through a users views of the real world, providing a composite (made up of several parts) view.

Information and Links to Articles Research can be presented below;

Article 1 ‘Hanker Hoon’ and 2 ‘Tech.co’ (Expanded Predictions of both articles combined together) =

  • The usage of AR will expand and evolve rapidly in the near future with seven key areas that will affect different areas of society in its economy and growth.
  • Areas AR can now be utilised is listed to Video games, Health Care, Engineering, Live Events, Video Entertainment, Real Estate, Retail, Military and Education.
  • One of features the AR can produce entails the inevitable expansion of handheld devices being more social and better with the camera becoming the primary mobile interface. This will create unique environment such as telling virtual storybooks that come to life in a child’s bedroom. Virtual measuring tape to measure areas/objects that normally be measured or produce a virtual map (Sat-Nav  composed over real world) to guide you to the right direction.
  • The feature above is also stretched to the industry of Real Estate and Home Improvement with the application of 3D Walkthrough of a property under construction, giving users the chance to see finished product. The IKEA PLACE App focuses on showcasing information about how an object or piece of furniture will be within the dimensions of the room with 98% accuracy.
  • An ‘FX Mirror and Memory Mirror’ can envision what clothing you want to buy and place over your over on a mirror to see how the clothes look without having to wear the clothes physically.
  • The area of ‘Medicine and Health Care’ can vary from a scanner that projects where the different valves and veins are so nurses and doctor can identify it on the first try. VA-ST Visor (Smart Space) primarily focuses on the people who are partially blind or legally blind; the device is taught identify 3D objects and identify them with a scene which can also be used for finding lost items.
  • ‘Google Expeditions’ is another prediction circulating on the idea of taking children on field trips around the world without leaving classroom which would benefit people with physical disabilities. The use of AR can also Enhance Museum Exhibits with extra material or animations provided to display information in a personal way as well as creating interaction with the information given out.

Artificial Intelligence Poster Development (Week 4 and 5). Collage/Photoshop Illustration Experimentation 1. Part 6.

The screenshots over the next few blogs will centre on the rough Collage arrangements/concepts of what the main imagery of the AI poster will look like linked to the subject of said AI gaining rights and Political and social consequences of this possible change, demonstrated by the poster ill produced mimicking a group against the individualism of AI.

Collage Arrangements (2 or 3) will be highlighted (*) to showcase their further development for the fruition of the final poster, both for the collage and possible Pen Tool Illustration in the form of a Silhouette at the time of writing this down (20/10/18).

Artificial Intelligence Poster Development (Week 4 and 5).Font Experimentation for PARA/PAAR ‘Adobe Illustrator’ Part 5

The next five screenshots showcase the fonts that might be used for the PAAR or PARA logo for the final poster. Final Name of logo will be chosen at some point (19/10/18)

Artificial Intelligence Poster Development (Week 4)Poster Layout Pages/ Collage Experimentation. Part 3

Screenshots below showcase the change in subject and presentation for poster which will be produced. Two rough drawings and 3 to 4 screenshots of collage arrangements that could be used for poster.

One of the collage arrangements will be chosen and expanded upon. This will be present in Blog post labelled Part 4. The Theme will be centred on the AI claiming rights and the backlash that could sprout from that scenario. This will be prevalent in the poster I will develop.

Sketches on the pages present in previous blog will not be further expanded upon due to the initial confusion of whether the Poster and 500 word Research were separate or needed to be combined together. The former turned out to be the case and is expanded upon in this blog.

2.jpg

The Group Name ‘PAAR’ (Peoples Against A.I Rights) will be experimented on Adobe Illustrator (Two/Three versions produced) and will most likely be placed in the bottom right corner of final poster.

A Black Silhouette of the Collage might be considered using the Pen Tool (Illustration on Photoshop) on its own or in front of the collage. Fiery background made up of red/oranges will be considered although experimentation screenshots will showcase another potential colour palette.

Colour Theory palette might be produced for poster development.

Artificial Intelligence Poster Development (Week 4) 500 Word Research (Rights etc.) Part 2

The issue that is being addressed over the next few paragraphs centre around the inevitable talking point of how we define the humane treatment of ‘Artificial intelligence’ in regards to getting the same rights as other human beings as well as sharing rules on what to do and what not to do. (Treatment, Punishments etc). Arguments for and against this will be addressed throughout this research.

Problems and issues that would arise from this possible consideration for ‘Superhuman Rights’ according to (Julien, J., 2018.) would consist of great resistance towards the AI that wants to be deemed a ‘Person’ and given rights normal human beings would inherit from birth.

Fear is the main driving force behind the campaigns against the rights for AI to have a voice mainly centres around the threat of losing Benefits, Free Health Insurance and many other Positives that the AI’s provide due to the labour of AI overtaking Human activity; the campaigns against this don’t want this social norm to change. The manner of threats that would be spouted vary from minor protests to acts of violence if said AI gets equal rights.

The AI, if it wanted, after gaining rights and citizenship would spend its earning on other projects that are not beneficial to the humans on the planet. For example the AI would willingly pay for a Spaceship for a future space journey rather than provide funding for human architecture. Although at the time the article was written it is unclear if how a free, deep thinking AI would approach certain topics such as financial situations.

The options that are currently brought up during discussions of this inevitability is according to various government lawyers there is no way to prove the AI that’s wants to claim its own rights can have a conscious or inherit Human Feelings.

Although it’s been stated that AI’s do have emotions although these emotions in question are completely different to what can be analysed in humans both Male or Female. Therefore an AI can never understand the emotions or experiences humans have which can also be said for humans not ever to under an AI’s state of being.

An Experiment has been currently in the works regarding how an AI consciousness would work. This would be performed by quarantining the said AI away from the internet so it doesn’t look up what the human term ‘Consciousness’ means and apply it to its answers; it would be tested on its sense of self, ability to mourn etc. Like a lot of propositions in regards to this subject it has been met with both criticism and scepticism.

The Government (American) main argument for the time being states the massive differences between Humans and AI and how a new justice system might have to be created to accommodate AI Specifically instead of sharing the rules and sensibilities set out by humans. This has been considered as Speciesism by various sources providing arguments against this viewpoint although the debate is still ongoing with only theories addressing this topic.

Typography Task 3 (Four Words on Illustrator, One version with added ‘Pen Tool’) Part 3

Excited Pen Tool Variant (Performed on Adobe Illustrator);

Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 16.32.48.png

Close up of Pen Tool Application (Below), Final Font Overall (Above).Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 17.01.56.png

The two screenshots Below showcase the how the outline was created using the Pen Tool on Adobe Illustrator. When the Pen Tool (Straight Lines) is switched to the Curvature Tool (Curved Lines) to complete the shape/outline the Anchor/Corner linking all the lines together must be clicked twice so the Pent line isn’t curved or adding extra curve with the Curvature Tool.Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 16.34.13.png

Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 16.35.24.pngFill (Crossed out in red diagonal line) and Stroke (Black) were applied to the font by creating a black outline across both exterior and interior of the seven words, the screenshots below demonstrate the tweaks needed to be done so the line is thin rather than thick.Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 16.38.03.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-12 at 16.38.11.png

The ‘Excited’ font made earlier on during Task 3 was utilised for the attempt at experimenting with the Pen Tool (An INTOUS Digital Pad was provided although the mouse used more prominently). Multiple layers were produced so the original Font will still be intact. ‘Skia’ font (San Serif and Modern Font Types Utilised) unchanged from the original layout for Excited.

The reason the ‘Excited’ font was chosen is due to it needing a third colour or hint of more detail which felt appropriate once the Pen Tool was applied. The outcome itself has improved to the Pen Tools appliance, making it more solid in appearance as well as structurally which was absence before the application of the Pen Tool.

Typography Task 3 (Four Words on Illustrator, One version with added ‘Pen Tool’) Part 2

Excited (Below);Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.39.59.png

Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.32.41.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.35.17.png

The version of ‘Excited’ that can be seen above focused upon the levels of adrenaline and colours associate to the word referring to this distinctive moment or phase within a situation.

‘Skia’ font (San Serif and Modern Font Types Utilised) is provided for the term with each letter mimicking the increased excitement before the peak and that same excitement lowering after said peak. ‘EXC’ representing rise, ‘I’ being the peak and ‘TED’ being the aftermath of the initial excitement.

Red (Primary Colour) for Stroke and Dark Yellow (Secondary Colour) formed in the Colour Mixer showcase the warm, happy and often manic traits that present during moments of being excited.

Confused (Below);

Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 13.07.07.png

Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.55.24.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.57.08.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-12 at 13.01.00.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-12 at 13.04.55.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-12 at 13.09.54.png

For the creation of the zany presentation of ‘Confused’ I incorporated three different fonts for each letter scattered in a wonky but readable manner (Presentation similar to the exercise of ‘Down’ Task 1 during Week 3′). Each letter varies in size and degree although words are often turned 90 or 40 degrees so they can be read, conveying the word clearly.

All Fonts link to all the Font Types available from Serif and Script (Trajan Colour), San Serif and Modern (Phosphate) and Display (Rosewood Std) linking to the random clutter associated to the word.

Colour was applied to the ‘Rosewood Std’ fonts to create an upbeat yet incoherent presence linking to word while also retaining sense of character. The three fonts also represent the elements that lead to the state of confusion with no logical attraction between the concepts that are currently misunderstood.

No clear colour palette was added to the font due to the word in question although the font ‘Trajan Colour’ could not adopt different tones of colour or strokes but was used anyway to its three-dimensional exterior.

Typography Task 3 (Four Words on Illustrator, One version with added ‘Pen Tool’) Part 1.

Angry (Below):Screen Shot 2018-10-11 at 17.30.30.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-11 at 17.13.01.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-11 at 17.18.25.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-11 at 17.19.10.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-11 at 17.20.34.png

Three Different fonts were used for the word ‘Angry’ to convey the often mixed feelings and triggers that occur when an individual is angry with no one reason to explain the outburst; I tried to convey this through the fonts. ‘Charlemagne Std Bold’, ‘Papyrus’ ad ‘Chalkduster’ being the main three Fonts (Serif and Script being main Font Types from combination for Angry).

The stroke option on the appearance  section was applied to the three fonts with a dark red highlight circling the individual letters of the word itself. Dark Red felt appropriate to the fiery confusion that often accompanies the state of anger.

The ‘Puppet Warp tool’ was used again with the ‘G’ being heavily modified to create a demonic, lavarsque result opposite the clear cut serifs. The letters were individually moved slightly to fit the bulbous ‘G’. ‘Angry’ is turned 45 degrees to display lack of level footing or control over the potent feeling described in the word.

Lathargic (Below):Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.07.57.png

Final version (Above), Puppet Warp Tool marking Bottom left. Font before change in Colour and Stroke, Bottom Right.

Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.09.08.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.03.02.png

Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.05.55.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.05.35.png

The idea behind the final version interpreting the word ‘Lathergic’ was influenced on the bodily appearance of a slug crawling up a wall with the Puppet warp tool utilised to create the slimy, organic exterior and stickiness often associated to slugs.

The main font used to convey the mock slug through lettering is Myriad Pro (Serif and Display being the main Font Types). Reason for the font in question is it fits the premise of a slug well with the puppet warp tool realising this the full as well as being a San Serif as a Serif would not be suitable due to harsh corners added detail which are key traits of a slug or the word ‘Lethargic’.

The colour grey was achieved tweaking the colour on Appearance using Colour Mixer to mimic to slugs natural appearance as well appeal to the dreary nature of the word being used.
