The object that could adopt a sound within the animation will be the Fan itself ‘Fan (Moving)’ Layer on the Timeline. Fitting to add it if needed as the fan is the main catalyst of the transition from point A to Point B of the Animation.

The String holding the frame (Plane) is done digitally using coloured rectangles being the only none 3D element in the animation. The reason for this is there was no image of string the would stand out clearly against the blue/purple tinted background so the digital method was applied. This will not be present in future animations due to consistency of subject matter and elements which crucial when attempting an animation.

Although I am happy with how the Animation turned it however contains mistakes and unrefined areas which will be rectified if I attempt this method again. Making ‘Every’ object (Movie Clip from the Library) have its own layer instead put two or more in the same one which led to confusion and even created untidy adjustments in size with each object in the respective frames.

The use of 3-D (Photographic) Images proved to be challenging due to the animation techniques only complimenting the 2-D format (Disney etc.) which was prevalent in my animation by appearing patchwork and collaged which was proved difficult to achieve a consistent quality throughout.

The Slideshow below demonstrates brief shots of the final animation produced on Adobe Animate;

Project: Timeline Animation (Week 8) Part 6.

This blog showcases the various images used for the final animation that was produced on Adobe Animate.

Updated Animation Sequence;

First section will comprise of two planes cut in half. The bigger piece of the plane turns to switch on Fan. There will be no fan beforehand spinning the frame piece comprised of halved planes. The reason I decided this is it didn’t add to the animation. The small piece raised to the top after starting at the bottom with the big piece lowered to the bottom to ignite fan (Plane: Frame).

Fan and Paper Aeroplane placed on different podiums (Unique in appearance, real photos used to create consistent presentation of work). I decided to move away slightly from the geometric shapes of Alexander Calder and the idea of the frame turning around as I felt it would be interesting to view out of place of both ends of frame. Plane Cut in Half indicating this as well as linking to Peter Fishli and David Weiss’s work.

The idea changed from spinning frame to frame being lifted up and down due to complex and tricky task of creating a spinning animation which would not have had a good outcome with the inclusion of 3D objects/Photos/Images thus the concept was dropped.

Background of Animation will the interior of a warehouse to suit the cold, mechanical presence of the machine in action due to the elements utilised in each image.

This Fan (Below) was also considered but was left at the cutting room floor. It just didn’t fit the requirements of a fan that displays powers to propel a paper aeroplane from one side of the room another as well as being tricky to operate when starting the animation leading to this decision.

Project: Timeline Animation (Week 7) Part 5.

First Idea I had before (based on Alexander Calder’s work) will centre on the machine pouring a cup of milk to the tea cup. This will start out with a fan blowing (Spinning animation briefly) the top half of the of the mock wind chime which would move slightly to hit four/five panels at the end of chime (move left to right).

When the final panel is hit it moves a switch which would release a weight (Lower to begin with before rising back to original position) connected a string connected to the cup (Full of Milk) floating mid-air. This cup would tilt 80/90% then revert back to original position after 4 to 5 seconds.

Image below shows Idea 1 expanded in a Rough Drawing;0[1]

Second Idea involves the same sort of principles displayed in Idea 1; the only change is the ending which will involve a fan blowing a paper aeroplane to a different from left to right. Fan angled 90% to blow aeroplane that is placed on a table before being propelled into the air (Might animate Aeroplane Landing on floor after machine Process). ‘Basket possibly pushed forward from Machine to Catch Aeroplane? This links more to the works of Rune Goldberg as well as Peter Fishli’ and David Weiss.

Image below shows Idea 2 expanded in a Rough drawing;0[2]

Rough Idea for 30 Second Animation to Create ‘Mad Machine’ (Both ideas influenced by ‘Alexander Calder’ with ‘Peter Fishli’ and ‘David Weiss’ in Presentation and Structure);

The Mad Machine/Chain reaction that will be the main focus of the 30 second animation (Expanded upon from Week 8 Onwards) will be based upon Idea 2 with two rods carrying four panels as a whole rather than three or more rods although this can be subject to change after this blog is published. Final Animation will be saved on a ‘.mov’ File Format.

Untitled 1937 by Alexander Calder 1898-1976

Alexander Calder, untitled, 1937

Tate, 2018. Alexander Calder, Untitled, 1937. [image online] Available at: <https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/calder-untitled-t07920> [Accessed 8 November 2018].

As the title suggests ‘Standing Mobile/Untitled’ uses a stable structure to support the extended arms. Calder used thinner grades of rod for the arms and legs of the work. Tripod stand also capable of suspending large and heavy work from the ceiling, this was generally his solution during the period the piece was conceived.

Untitled, 1937 was chosen due to being less elaborate than ‘Mobile’ or ‘Antennae with Red and Blue Dots’ in terms of it not being suspended in the air and only displaying three rather six or more shapes. This minimalist approach will be considered for Idea 1 or 2 although this could be added to any of the two if it’s more suitable for the final animation.

Antennae with Red and Blue Dots c.1953 by Alexander Calder 1898-1976

Alexander Calder, Antennae with Red and Blue Dots, c.1953

The Third piece I chosen is essentially a hanging Sculpture/Chain reaction/Mad Invention extended just over a metre in each direction and is designed to be displayed suspended from its upper steel wire. When Hung the piece constantly shifts in position and will most likely not resemble static photos of it fully extended or observed. This was Calder’s main intention for his sculptures (particularly the three I expanded upon).

‘Antennae with Red and Blue Dots’ was the piece that has the most influence on the two idea’s conjured for the Mad Inventions/Chain Reaction Project with the idea of each shape/frame placed on ends of rods with each one tapping one against the other from the top to the bottom in a continuous sequence.

It is also more stylistically pleasing due to the consistent colour palette and the positioning of the rods themselves, creating an elegant outcome linking to Calder’s Original motive behind the work I researched.

The Multi-movement Bomb Catcher

[CARTOON STOCK Bombing Defences Vintage and Historic Cartoons] n.d. [image online] Available at: <https://www.cartoonstock.com/vintage/directory/b/bombing_defences.asp> [Accessed 8 November 2018].William_Heath_Robinson_Inventions_-_Page_103.png

Main Aims conveyed in The Multi-movement Bomb Catcher was for the machine itself was, like ‘The Shrapnel Collector’, its goal was to catch bombs from the arriving enemy with this process based on a revolving crane that is stuck in one place on top of a building amongst other cranes catching said bombs.

Like’ The Shrapnel Collector’, this was chosen by myself due to the possibility of it functioning in real life despite the implausible ideas put forward of catching bombs. It is also the simplest design next to Deceiving ‘Nazi Dive-Bombers’ in regards to moving parts and elements that build up this contraption. Limited functions/equipment will be considered for the two ideas and their rough drawings.

Deceiving Nazi Dive-Bombers

William_Heath_Robinson_Inventions_-_Page_067.pngThis quirky contraption depicts the idea of presenting a replica of a town/village and placing it on its side in the air with the main aim of distracting the enemy. A tank was refitted with a bucket for the incoming bombs that are aimed for the mock town/villages despite being sideways with gravity taking hold to drag the bomb to the bucket.

Reasoning for choosing this out of the various Mad Inventions research centered on Heath Robinson is the sheer inventiveness and imagination behind the machines function which was joyous to observe when first gazed upon. This wonderfully convoluted methodology will be presented within the ideas brought forward of pouring milk into teacup or propelling a paper aeroplane into the air.

The main concept behind the work of ‘Mobile’ is the use of suspending forms (Coloured Shapes) that move with the flow of air. Unlike a solid mass/weight, these mobiles continually change the space around them as they move. Combination of subtle balance of forms and colours resulted in works that could create animated versions of Paintings (Or was considered by Calder himself).

I chose Calder’s ‘Mobile’ due to the unique concept and outcome which distinctly keeps itself away from works like Rune Goldberg or Heath Robinson. Nature and Environment being the main practical sources to give works like ‘Mobile’ its own identity. Calder’s ‘Mobile’ and the other two works I chosen in his gallery will be greatly felt in the first stage of both my ideas, particularly the suspended frame on the ceiling.

Project: Timeline Animation (Week 7) Part 2.

Research of Ten Chain Reaction/Mad Machines (Select few Artists who created them) can be seen as follows;

Peter Fishli and David Weiss (Articles found on Blog Section of Main Tate Website);

The Way Things Go (English Translation) Documents a casual chain made up of everyday objects, mimicking the frameworks of Rube Goldberg’s machine. The work is placed in a warehouse with the work itself being 70-100 feet long. Fire, Water and Law of Gravity manipulate the objects in motion demonstrating Cause and effect.

The reason why I chosen to expand upon Peter Fishli and David Weiss work ‘The Way Things Go’ is unlike the other works conjured by the artists I’d researched they’re work has the benefit of reality behind it through a short film. The Novel use of everyday objects put into a creative sequence over a long period of time is stunning to observe. They as well as Alexander Calder will influence the drawings for proposed animation.

Rune Goldberg (Information and Image originated from the site ‘All That’s Interesting’);

All That’s Interesting (ATI), 2018.What Is A Rube Goldberg Machine? (Hint: You’ve Seen One Before) [VIDEO]. [online] Available at: <https://allthatsinteresting.com/rube-goldberg-machine> [Accessed 8 November 2018].rube-goldberg-cartoonWikipedia Commons, 2015. [image online] Available at: <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rube_Goldberg_Cartoon_-_18_Nov_1921_Duluth_Herald.jpg> [Accessed 8 November 2018].

The machine drawn by Rune Goldberg showcases the elaborate process of retrieving soap if it is on the floor, depicted in a humorous yet improbable fashion. His work (Early Cartoons) often referred to as a ‘symbol of man’s capacity for exerting maximum effort to accomplish minimal results’. Use animals/creatures are present in machine which stands out from the other Chain Reaction/Mad Invention work expanded in this research.

What has drawn me to expand upon Rune Goldberg’s Work is the child-like enthusiasm and logic that plagues the gallery of work he produced during his lifetime. Like Heath Robinsons Mad inventions, Rune’s work is primarily focused on the theme of Zany Humour which is displayed through the Nonsense logic that is present in the fictitious creatures that can prop up here and there.

Heath Robinson (Artwork Originating from ‘Heath Robinson: Dreams and Machines Exhibition);

The Shrapnel Collector

[File:William heath Robinson Inventions-Page o76.png] n.d. [image online] Available at: <https://www.weekendnotes.co.uk/im/005/02/heath-robinson-illustrated-art-gallery-mottisfort-11.jpg> [Accessed 8 November 2018].

Like Rube Goldberg’s work, Heaths cartoons produced during the First World War were often done in a humorous fashion to degrade the enemy to help the British War Effort (The Effort Itself Also Inspiring Heaths Cartoons during this period).

The Shrapnel Collector focused upon the British Army/Troopers collecting the shrapnel laid out by the enemy in a Fashion not to dissimilar to the illustrations found in the Beano Comic (Style Present throughout Heaths gallery) by using a modified bike with a turbine spinning barrels above the soldier’s heads.

What drew me to choose this particular concept of Heath’s out of the three researched is the logic and presentation of the invention itself could be tweaked and refined for a practical (If flawed) use in reality which breaks away from Hyper-Nonsense of the other works I picked from his exhibition ‘Dreams and Machines’.

Artificial Intelligence Poster Development (Week 7). Collage/Photoshop Illustration Experimentation 1. Part 14.

Slideshow below demonstrate further Experimentation (And Final Fonts) using Adobe Illustrator for the A.I. Poster. This Blog highlighting Final steps for the fruition of the A.I. Poster (Font, Size and Colour are highlighted in each screenshot containing the appropriate word);

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The reasoning behind final choice of fonts and sizes for the phrase ‘DO THEY HAVE THE RIGHT?!’ is the way each font I felt conveyed the word perfectly, particularly HAVE and RIGHT which are the two that stand out the most. As well as being similar in appearance they both act as a way of making up a mock sentence within poster comprising of ‘HAVE RIGHT’ which emphasis the overall theme of the poster message.

Inspiration for DO THE HAVE THE RIGHT font choices were drawn from the old advertisements within old Victorian Advertisement’s which utilised various fonts to promote products (Style also affiliated with the Circus).

DO THEY HAVE (Top Left) and THE RIGHT (Bottom Right) were both separated to draw the eye of the viewer to examine the entire poster as well as filling out empty space laid out for the application of said fonts/phrase. Originally, they would’ve been tilted 90% but this would’ve made the font/phrase smaller in appearance as well as convolute the environment of the poster.

Final Choices Made behind the Fonts/Sizes of PAAR (People Against A.I. Rights) mostly comprise of the Light Green Body with the Dark Blue Outline rather than the inclusion of Orange or Red. Reasoning behind this is the chosen colours stand out more on top of the Orange Background as well as being easy to view from a distance. This also links to the Original Colour Arrangement of the ‘Colour Wheel’ opposite the Green Reef within the Collage and Illustrated Robot Head.

Inclusion of Smaller Fonts spelling out ‘People etc.’ (Highlighted in Italic) as well as the main words for PAAR being spelt diagonally to write out a clear abbreviation of the words within the Political Groups Name. PAAR, DO THEY HAVE and THE RIGHT were copied and pasted from Adobe Illustrator to Photoshop.

This approach also created enough space within the poster itself to contain the phrase ‘DO THEY HAVE THE RIGHT’ which should draw the eye of the viewer first then observe the group name promoting poster after. Structure/Presentation present in ‘PAAR’ is also prevalent in the word ‘VOTE’ although a different font was used to distinguish itself from PAAR (Peoples Against A.I. Rights).

Final Slideshow demonstrates the Further Development of the Robot head as well as showing the final A.I. Poster Variant as a whole (Containing final Positions for customised Fonts as well as the presentation of the Collage/illustration);

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The logic behind the Red Backdrop (Kyle’s Paintbox- Wet Blender 50) behind the Illustrated robot head in question was to draw on the original conception of how the Gradient background would’ve contributed (Before being changed to Orange Background) with the idea of the eye being more drawn to the Small Robot Head peering behind Authoritative Human Symbol of Law.

Red mimicking blood spatters linking to the group (PAAR) Fears and Predictions of how A.I. will be Violent and Nonconforming, particularly towards Human Groups. The colour scheme for the Robot Head and Red Backdrop links more the Original Colour Wheel which involved a Dark Red and Grey Blue. Erasure tool used refined Hammer/Green Reef Collage.

Various Shades of Blue, Grey, Black, Orange and White were applied to flesh out the Robot Head in question with aesthetic similar to a Rough Coloured Pencil Drawing which I felt linked nicely to the worn usage of the robot in question as well the connection to the red backdrop with the colours indicating Violence and Conflict.

The painting of Robot head originally started off in Block Colours from Darker to Lighter tones until mid-way through the process I experimented with adding multiple quick strokes and added upon it layer after layer to give the head an Urban, almost Get-to feel that would be present within a Third World Country.

Project: Timeline Animation (Week 7) Part 1.

Paragraphs below demonstrate notes written in class;

Pixels are squares of colour. No TIFFs (Not suitable for Web work). GIFS, PNG and JPEGS Suitable.

Bitmap;

 • Made of pixels
 • Loses resolution when enlarged. Turns Pixelated.
 • Photographs will become pixelated
 • PNG, JPEG
 • To Create Bitmaps, you have to use Photoshop.

Vectographics;

 • Load more quickly than Bit map
 • Made using Algorithms
 • Has an x and y axis
 • E.g. Logo Needs to be Scalable
 • To create Vector graphics, you have to use adobe illustrator
 • File sizes smaller than Bitmap

Tiff;

 • Very high resolution
 • Cannot be opened on Internet
 • Just used for Printers.
 • Vectographic are smaller in file size to Bit map (Adobe Illustrator). File extension is SBG. JPEGS; Doesn’t support transparent background (Millions of Colours; used for Photographs. Make simple flat colour images look odd to file adding wide variation of colour).

GIFS; Support transparent background (256 Colours; Web save colours. Good for Simple image, flat areas of colour).

PNG; Support transparent background (Mixture of Two. Millions of Colours and Supports Transparency. Heavier ‘Big File Size’ than JPEG and GIFS).

SVG; Used for Vectographics.

Use Small images that is not pixelated or heavy in File Size for Adobe Animate. Adobe Animate (Similar to other Adobe Products. Same tools as Photoshop in regards to Select Tool, Rectangle, Expanded Brushes etc). White Arrow (Direct Select) only used to change pathways.

After Talking to Tina it became clear the use of a Gradient Background is considered lazy and not aesthetically pleasing, this also blurs the message of the poster as the poster should be clear in its imagery/message. The Orange background was placed instead as a response t these points in question.

Colour scheme of Robot Head will also change to a more Blueish Grey to indicate more as a Robot Head as it currently doesn’t indicate what its supposed to be.

Criticism was also made in regards to the collage itself with the Robot Head not being prominent enough but this will not be changed although I will push forward with making sure elements (Imagery) included in Poster showcase the Message/Theme clearly without text. I feel once Tweaks mentioned above are applied the Poster will perform the aspects needed to appropriately present the Research produced prior.

PAAR will include the first letters in in Capital letters wit the rest of the words in Lower case (For Example People Against A.I Rights) Make the I in AI the size fitting between lower and higher case.

Artificial Intelligence Poster Development (Week 6). Collage/Photoshop Illustration Experimentation 1. Part 12.

The Slideshow below showcases the various backgrounds that placed behind the Collage/Illustration using the gradient tool on Photoshop;

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

When the Background Experimentation was performed the Collage/Illustration has yet to be refined to a good presentation, this will improve over the weeks. The Gradient tool was used its a quicker method of providing quality backgrounds as well as the background variants in its gallery fits in with the theme/presentation of the poster itself.

The backgrounds I will consider expanding upon for the Final A3 Poster will be Backgrounds 2, 4 and 6. Background 4 and 6 are more likely to be further developed due to nice contrast in effect and primary colour which really makes the Collage/Illustration Pop at the time of writing this down although this could change.

I will place the first top end of line where Robot Head is positioned and drag it sideways to the bottom left of poster so focus is on Robot Head. This can be seen in Backgrounds 4 and 6 although the direction of pattern can be anywhere (This might be briefly experimented with final Gradient in Week 7 Hopefully).

The two potential fonts that I might expand upon and apply to the poster during Week 7/8 will either be ‘Arial Rounded MT Bold’ or ‘OCR A Std’. The reason I chosen these two in particular is the text Arial Rounded MT Bold has the soft, friendly appearance that a group (Especially in the Political Spectrum) would adopt to gain its intended audience.

‘OCR A Std’ however leans more to actual themes and viewpoints that this group would uphold with the font being digital and iconic in its usage of the digital alphabet. Font will be tweaked on Adobe Illustrator and Transferred to the Photoshop Document containing the A.I. Poster.
