VJ Project. Pleasure Principle Research and Early Development within Group. Semester 2. Week 6. Part 1.

Screenshot that can be seen below depicts the first mind map (Development) within the Group I’m in labelled Group 7. Further Development will be showcased in future blogs to depict the evolving, creative process.

After the session the group as a whole set out the task for everyone to do a select few drawings on two/three ideas that were discussed during the first meet up. The drawings I produced expand on Idea 1 (Girl with headphones) and 2 (Human Architecture vs. Nature) which can be seen below;

0
First Part of animation starts with girl with calm, indifferent expression with the sequence that occurs when theres high volume the face distorts and lights up to a psychedelic wormhole with the inside of the mouth mimicking the presentation of a Kaleidoscope.
0-1
Image that appears when theres low volume is a plain building floating in a greyish blue void while at High Volume the wildlife (Nature) starts to cover the building until its its completely covered when music/noise is at its highest volume.

Both Drawings were posted on the Group Chat set up on the ‘Messenger’ app which provides that main means of communication the four members (Including myself) within the group. Sketches from the other members of the group will be posted in a future post.

The Digital Drawing and Gif that can be seen below depict the rough realisation of the ideas originally conceived in the first group meeting. The said drawing/gif produced Marta (One of the three other members opposite me in the group);

Research into the term ‘Pleasure Principle‘ can be seen below;

The Term ‘Pleasure Principle’ was originally coined by the late Sigmund Freud which used to describe the motions and drives of individuals who seek pleasure or avoid pain. He argued that said individuals can go to great lengths to avoid pain in any form especially during a state of weakness or vulnerability.
Within Psychoanalytic Theory, the ‘id’ (One of three components within Freud’s Structural Model of psychology) is part of the unconscious dedicated to pleasure and base drives, Pleasure Principle is driven by this ‘id’.

Freud even proposed his ‘id’ concept defines the personality formed in early childhood and infancy (Ego and Superego developing shortly after that). Despite the principle influencing children to grow up in a realistic fashion of obtaining pleasures without overlooking the restraints of reality, there are still people who suffer from anxiety, depression and other behavioural disturbances when their needs for pleasure are not accomplished.
Some people even engage in self-defeating activities to uncover hidden pleasures that may or may not prop up in said negative situations. An example of this would be gaining pleasure from an apology, either from them give it out or from the other individual/s, after a verbal or physical fight. These behaviours only end if the pain supersedes the temporary pleasure.
Modern Psychologists, however, do not follow the guidelines set out by Freud’s theory although the pleasure principle in question as well as other related concepts are still often used/referred to within therapy. ‘Cognitive behavioural therapy’ can help to handle and rid of their self-defeating thoughts to maximise pleasure as well as minimize the suffering that occurs within both emotional and physical pain

Semester 2. Assignment 4 ‘Digital vs Analog Report’ (Week 4/5).

The basic definition for Analog and Digital as well as the main similarities and differences can be broken down below;

Analog technology transforms information into electric pulses of varying amplitude while Digital technology translate information into binary format (Numbers, zero or one) where each bit is representative of two distinct amplitudes.

Analog Technology is not flexible while Digital technology is more flexible when implemented. However, the cost of having Analog Technology is low and portable while Digital Technology is very costly and not easily portable (Depending upon the digital tool). Both Analog and Digital Technology are similar due to both being used to transmit information through electric signals.

Diffen, 2012. Analog vs. Digital. [online] Available at: <https://www.diffen.com/difference/Analog_vs_Digital> [Accessed 20 February 2019].

Analog (35mm Film etc.);

Analogy Imagery within a filmstrip are expendable with light travelling through the cameras lens to strike the film (35mm) and spark a chemical reaction. This was often expensive, time consuming and very difficult to take from one location to another. Despite advances in Digital Technology, the Analog camera is still used for superior image quality and speed capability due to technical components that a Digital Camera lacks.

Digital (Film Cameras);

Unlike Analog Film, the light travelling down the lens of the camera transforms into electronic signals. In other words, information can be transferred or manipulated remotely rather than using a cable or tool to build up a physical network which Analog often requires.

Unlike Digital and Analog Photography Camera’s, Film Camera’s create a long line of photos that are sped through a device to mimic the illusion of movement despite the use of a long line of still images.

Q-SEE, 2018. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANALOG CAMERAS AND DIGITAL CAMERAS?. [online] Available at: <https://q-see.com/blogs/q-see/what-is-the-difference-between-analog-and-digital> [Accessed 20 February 2019].

Analogue (35mm Film for Photographs);

The components that make an Analog Camera what it is comprises of a ‘light meter’ which utilises light falling on the photocell to generate an electrical current which moves a needle across a scale; the brighter the light within the location you shot, the greater the movement within the photograph itself. This device is also found within Digital Camera’s demonstrating the blend of the Old and New Media.

Digital (Digital Camera’s);

A Digital Camera for Photography provides the opportunity to tweak the photo on the spot rather than transferring the image to another device with options like image exposure to providing added tweaks which wouldn’t be possible with an Analog Camera due to its basic function and lack of opportunities to rectify mistakes.

The prominent trait that both Analog and Digital Camera’s for Photography have is the focus on producing one individual image rather than capturing a situation through multiple shots to create a motion picture. The blend of applying the ‘light meter’ to both Analog and Digital are also what links them together as referred to earlier in this report.

Quora, 2017. How do analog and digital photography differ?. [online] Available at <https://www.quora.com/How-do-analog-and-digital-photography-differ> [Accessed 20 February 2019].

Analogue (Painting);

Analog painting requires the use of coloured pigments in physical form with various density and blending properties once applied to create a portrait, landscape or post-modern piece with the craft itself often requiring a long time to master the understanding of colour, light and techniques to avoid mistakes that can ruin a piece before it’s taken a form.

Digital (Adobe Programmes, Photoshop etc.);

The inclusion of Digital Art, like Digital Cameras for Film and Photography, use numerical and binary algorithms and data to process and manipulate information rather than the expendable and expensive physical items often associated to Analog practises. More features are provided to undo mistakes and tweak the digital paintings without losing the work in one sitting which is common with Analog painting.

The trait that is reoccurring from Analog to Digital Painting is the use of chaos through coloured patches layered overtime to create a figure or landscape which requires talent in knowing how to manipulate the chaotic process in a more structured fashion which, as was stated in earlier in this report, requires large amounts of time understanding and practicing the craft by applying a combination of different thought processes. Analog and Digital Technologies having little affect on improving or taking aspects away from this unique medium.

The screenshots Above depict the final presentation that I tweaked with the rest of the group for Tuesday 19th February 2019 with added slides that were not included in the final presentation.

Tweaked ‘Back Banner’ (Produced after Feedback given during Week 12);

After receiving feedback from Tina (Main Tutor) and rest of the class when presenting the groups final front and back banners for the ‘London Is Open Project’, there was positive feedback to be had on the how the Final Front Banner appeared as well as the general Data-Driven concept behind our group work.

The only Criticisms that were made in relation to the work we produced as group was upon the Final Back Banner itself which is comprised of the design being too cluttered due to many objects taking up space with the recommendation of applying more focus on the one question being the Hashtag ‘What’s Your Story’ and the title of the campaign ‘London Is Open’ with the three boxes taking up the remainder of the space rather than the other questions that was initial on the Back Banner.

During the process of tweaking the Final Front Banner following the feedback given prior we, as a group, decided to stick with a consistent font choice with the chosen font being ‘Futura’. This was considered due to key piece of feedback being heavily focused on reducing as much clutter as possible as well as create a more consistent and unified presentation which was not present in the original version we produced.

Apart from the changes mentioned above the general colour scheme throughout as well as the concept behind how the digital screens presenting the general public’s tweets are still left to their initial conception from the beginning of the projects early group chats.

The final tweaked banner in question can be seen below;

The feedback given to the original presentation can be seen below depicted in written form. Strengths being clear presentation of ideas while the common weaknesses are found in the layout of the presentation itself as well as the screens needing more tweaks to have a more unified precence indicating the group work that has been applied;

Semester 2. Group Work, Further Banner Development. London is Open.

Presentation to Group/Group Work preparation for Final Presentation. Week 3;

Both banners presented are produced after iteration/feedback from the week prior=

First Front Banner (Big Ben);

The front banner design I produced within the group centres around showcasing of representing a certain demographic of people with a flag superimposed over a monument from the demographics original background.

A static animation will be presented on the front banner with three slides. First being Big ben on its own, after 10/30 seconds it transitions to the union jack over the big ben. Then after another 30 seconds the hashtag ‘London Is Open’ and Demographic Percentage will be present before fading to blue background briefly before starting the cycle of animation again.

Second Front Banner (What’s Your Story);

Minimalist design with the phrase ‘What’s Your Story’ dominating the space of the banner with the hashtag also enlarged to a large size. Although my design doesn’t include this visual feature, the use of a large digital screen (White Circle) will be displaying chosen stories from the viral campaign ‘What’s Your Story’ which will retrieve stories from people of different background recounting their experiences of the city itself

The Back Panel would be similar to the Second Front Banner but with space in the middle (White Circle?) to display the changing viral stories picked from social media (Twitter Viral Campaign). The stories that will be brief paragraphs will change every 15/30 minutes. The Phrase ‘What’s Your Story’ will still be present above the viral tweets with the hashtag below the stories in question.

Iteration/Feedback from Class;

 • Create/Provide Different Fonts (Too Bold).
 • Maybe not use the ’White British’ Poster design. Provides a political edge that is not wanted for this campaign.
 • ‘What’s Your Story’ is a good concept.
 • The use of Iconic Buildings is also a good concept providing an appealing presentation due to the use of colours.
 • Make Stats More Uniform. This will lead to the group forming statistics centre around the various nationalities within London.

First Front Panel Iteration (Feedback on First Panel);

Feedback from Fabiano and Christian (Fellow Students within the Course) recommended to fill out the empty space within the First Front Banner itself with the fonts enlarged to fill out said space. The fonts being ‘Average Percentage’ and ‘London Is Open’ ‘Marker Felt’ Format.

Tina (Main Tutor) also recommended to replace the sky with a more attractive, less detailed background so the focus is on the Big Ben itself which is already highly detailed. I will provide a lighter blue behind the twitter logo to make it stand out more as well as turn the fonts in a different direction. ‘After Iteration’ is the outcome of applying said feedback.

Second Front Panel Before Iteration/Feedback (Below);

Feedback/Iteration on Second Front Panel Design (Tasarla, Sasha and Jacob.);

The main criticisms that were pointed out during their overview of my first attempt at the second front panel is the over-complication of the fonts used throughout, all three agreeing it should all have one font type (‘Cooper Std’ being the chosen font).

Reductions of colours is also referred to make it easier on the eye as well as make the panel more direct in presenting its subject matter. Size of font, like the first panel design, was also suggested to be more bigger in scope so the message/slogan and hashtag are more prominent, making it clear to the passing audience what the panel is promoting and what question it poses towards them.

Second Front Panel After Iteration/Feedback (Below);

 • I felt the criticism provided for both the front panel designs were very informative and encouraged me create better outcomes of presentation with simplification, limited colour palettes and more direct use of imagery being the main points made and implemented in later version.

Semester 2. Week 2. Further Group Work; Flow Diagram and Feedback.

unnamed

After Further discussion within the group it was unanimously agreed that the ‘recycling’ theme should be scrapped to focus on the ‘monument shaped flags’ idea from earlier discussion. This was decided as it links more to the Storytelling factor of the project which this would require individuals to write their own or family/friends stories linked to migration or heritage (Linking to prominent demographics within London).

The ‘digital marketing’ that this idea will utilise is the use of a certain number of retweets of shorts stories (Paragraphs) under the hashtag ‘What’s Your Story’ or ‘London Is Open’. Selected tweets/stories from viral campaign will be shown on the back panel liking to the image presentation of the front panel. Story/Tweet changes every 30 minutes or Hour while still linking to what was presented in the front panel (Five/Six stories on a loop in static animation for Back Panel?).

Semester 2. Week 1. Group Mind map and three proposed ideas. Part 2.

unnamed

The Group I’m in are comprised of Fabiano, Tara and Andrew. Image above showcase mind map produced during Week 1 with Tara and Fabiano.

Three Ideas presentation to group for Week 2 presented below;

Three possible ideas for ‘London is Open’ campaign and one idea expanded on how the Data Driven Digital Marketing will affect it (Audience interaction with billboard and results billboard will produce as a consequence of said interaction);

 1. Try to create the hastag #hatch, a baby chick would appear from an egg after a certain number of tweets/retweets with the main hashtag trending the London is Open Twitter account. Meaning refers to London is open for new beginnings and welcomes the unexpected.

 1. Expansion on brief outline of Idea 4 from previous group discussion with new elements provided by myself; after a number of people hashtag a love heart symbol the heart made up of a collage of multinational flags will burst (fireworks) with the slogan ‘Love is London, #London is Open’ appearing for brief period of time before turning back to the heart again.

 1. The hashtag #bekind or #support can be become viral by having people take photos of themselves committing kindness to another human being. After a certain number of tweets/retweet and photos, the two hands shaking each other/two people hugging/flower (Black outlines, simplified, style of maker pen?) with the slogan #London is Open below, the image (hand Shaking etc.) will fill with a collage of all the photos that went viral on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram with the word ‘Always’ appearing below the #London is Open slogan for a period of time before disappearing. Each billboard can have a different array of collaged images. This connects to warm sentiment of the London is Open campaign in regards to showing compassion to one’s fellow man; this would also help to spread kindness, maturity and respect between the various individuals within London.

The Idea I feel would be the most affective in showcasing what the campaign ‘#London is Open’ is all about is the third idea involving the photo collages and hashtag #support. This would not only bring out the best in people during this troubled political climate but also provide a lovely piece on the billboards down oxford street showcasing the preferred universal quality of providing support, kindness and respect to whoever needs it’s. This will also instill more maturity and provide purpose to people’s lives, both young and old, which is sadly all too common for people to not have a positive purpose or goal in life.
