Letterpress Project. Week 5/6. Semester 2 (Part 2).

This post showcases the three digital experiments utilising the letterpress prints from the practical session. Experiments 1 and 2 depicting the blend of Analog and Digital which is ever present in the modern age. Experiment 3 mimicking the aesthetic of a front book cover and Experiment 4 being the more abstract concept in creating a human figure out of the prints available. Photoshop was the main programme that create the outcomes presented within his post;

After receiving feedback from the class as well as Tina (Main Tutor) in relation to the Week 12 Presentation it has became apparent that the first tweaked print I produced for the letterpress project was the strongest of the four. As a result, extra comments were made on how the said digital print can be further improved in presentation with the main points being to fill out the background more with crosses in a darker shade of red with the orange square containing the phrase ‘Free Your Digital’ having lower opacity due to it not blending with the overall aesthetic of the digital print.
I considered the criticisms made I quickly applied it to the print to create a more polished outcome which I feel appears more superior over the initial experimentation which didn’t convey the intention of showing the clear blend between Analog and Digital. The Final Digital Print in question for the Letterpress Project can be seen below;

Semester 2. Assignment 4 ‘Digital vs Analog Report’ (Week 4/5).

The basic definition for Analog and Digital as well as the main similarities and differences can be broken down below;

Analog technology transforms information into electric pulses of varying amplitude while Digital technology translate information into binary format (Numbers, zero or one) where each bit is representative of two distinct amplitudes.

Analog Technology is not flexible while Digital technology is more flexible when implemented. However, the cost of having Analog Technology is low and portable while Digital Technology is very costly and not easily portable (Depending upon the digital tool). Both Analog and Digital Technology are similar due to both being used to transmit information through electric signals.

Analog (35mm Film etc.);

Analogy Imagery within a filmstrip are expendable with light travelling through the cameras lens to strike the film (35mm) and spark a chemical reaction. This was often expensive, time consuming and very difficult to take from one location to another. Despite advances in Digital Technology, the Analog camera is still used for superior image quality and speed capability due to technical components that a Digital Camera lacks.

Digital (Film Cameras);

Unlike Analog Film, the light travelling down the lens of the camera transforms into electronic signals. In other words, information can be transferred or manipulated remotely rather than using a cable or tool to build up a physical network which Analog often requires.

Unlike Digital and Analog Photography Camera’s, Film Camera’s create a long line of photos that are sped through a device to mimic the illusion of movement despite the use of a long line of still images.

Analogue (35mm Film for Photographs);

The components that make an Analog Camera what it is comprises of a ‘light meter’ which utilises light falling on the photocell to generate an electrical current which moves a needle across a scale; the brighter the light within the location you shot, the greater the movement within the photograph itself. This device is also found within Digital Camera’s demonstrating the blend of the Old and New Media.

Digital (Digital Camera’s);

A Digital Camera for Photography provides the opportunity to tweak the photo on the spot rather than transferring the image to another device with options like image exposure to providing added tweaks which wouldn’t be possible with an Analog Camera due to its basic function and lack of opportunities to rectify mistakes.

The prominent trait that both Analog and Digital Camera’s for Photography have is the focus on producing one individual image rather than capturing a situation through multiple shots to create a motion picture. The blend of applying the ‘light meter’ to both Analog and Digital are also what links them together as referred to earlier in this report.

Analogue (Painting);

Analog painting requires the use of coloured pigments in physical form with various density and blending properties once applied to create a portrait, landscape or post-modern piece with the craft itself often requiring a long time to master the understanding of colour, light and techniques to avoid mistakes that can ruin a piece before it’s taken a form.

Digital (Adobe Programmes, Photoshop etc.);

The inclusion of Digital Art, like Digital Cameras for Film and Photography, use numerical and binary algorithms and data to process and manipulate information rather than the expendable and expensive physical items often associated to Analog practises. More features are provided to undo mistakes and tweak the digital paintings without losing the work in one sitting which is common with Analog painting.

The trait that is reoccurring from Analog to Digital Painting is the use of chaos through coloured patches layered overtime to create a figure or landscape which requires talent in knowing how to manipulate the chaotic process in a more structured fashion which, as was stated in earlier in this report, requires large amounts of time understanding and practicing the craft by applying a combination of different thought processes. Analog and Digital Technologies having little affect on improving or taking aspects away from this unique medium.

Poem Extract (The Magic Wood by Henry Treece);

The wood is full of shining eyes,
The wood is full of creeping feet,
The wood is full of tiny cries;
You must not go to the wood at night!

He sang me a song in backwards words
And drew me a dragon in the air
I saw his teeth through the back of his head
And a rat’s eyes winking from his hair.

Song Lyrics (The Small Face’s: All Or Nothing);

(All or nothing)
For me, for me, for me we’re not children
(All or nothing)
To keep on working out for me
(All or nothing)
For me, for me, for me
Come on children, yeah
(All or nothing)
Yeah, yeah, yeah
(All or nothing)
I guess I’m singin’ to myself
(All or nothing)
For me, yeah
